About Foxglove Forest Reserve

Foxglove Forest Reserve is a protected national forest area located in western Oregon, encompassing over 120,000 acres of predominantly old-growth Douglas fir and western red cedar forest. The forest's terrain includes rolling hills, deep river canyons, and highland meadows, with elevations ranging from 1,200 to 4,200 feet. The reserve is named after the abundant foxglove wildflowers that bloom in early summer, adding vibrant color to its lush understory. Historically, the area was home to several Native American tribes who used the abundant natural resources for sustenance and cultural practices. Later, the region faced pressures from timber harvesting, but preservation efforts led to its designation as a National Forest Reserve in 1958. Today, Foxglove Forest Reserve provides visitors with a peaceful wilderness experience. Recreational activities include over 150 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, excellent fly fishing in cold, clear streams, and backcountry camping sites. The reserve is also a notable birding location, home to northern spotted owls, pileated woodpeckers, and various migratory songbirds. Key landmarks include the scenic Foxglove Ridge Overlook, which provides vast views of the forest canopy and Cascades beyond, and the historic Gold Creek Trail, a route once used during early 20th-century gold prospecting. The forest appeals to outdoor enthusiasts seeking solitude alongside opportunities for wildlife observation and nature photography.
